Understanding Spoofed Phone Calls, AI Voice Scams, and What You Can Do
Tips and Information from Your CCB Team
At CCB, your safety is our priority. As your locally-owned and operated bank, we know that protecting your personal and financial information is part of earning your trust—and we take that responsibility seriously. You’ve chosen CCB because you value personal service and community connection, and we’re proud to stand beside you with proactive support and guidance in today’s evolving digital landscape.
Fraudsters are using new technology like spoofed phone calls and AI (Artificial Intelligence) generated deepfakes to trick even the most cautious consumers. That’s why we want to help you recognize the signs of fraud and know how to act when something doesn’t feel right.
What Is Spoofing?
Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information that shows up on your caller ID to disguise their identity. It’s a tactic scammers use to make their call look like it’s coming from someone you trust—a local number, a government agency, or even a bank like CCB. The goal? To trick you into revealing sensitive information like account numbers, Social Security numbers, or login credentials. And with AI tools, it’s getting harder to spot a scam just by how it sounds.
What is AI Voice Cloning and Deepfakes?
Fraud has become more sophisticated. Scammers now use artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic the voices of people you know or trust. They may pretend to be a friend or family member in need, or impersonate a bank employee—sometimes even faking video. These AI-generated deepfakes are convincing and dangerous. Even tech-savvy individuals are falling victim, which makes staying aware and skeptical more important than ever.
Smart Tips from Your CCB Team to Keep You Safe
As your banking partner, CCB is here to help you recognize fraud and respond confidently. Here are our most important tips for 2025:
- Be skeptical—even if the number looks familiar
ID can be spoofed. Don’t trust the number—trust your instincts. If something seems suspicious, hang up and call CCB directly using the number on your card or from our official website: www.countonccb.com.
- Don’t answer calls from unknown numbers
If you’re not expecting a call or don’t recognize the number, let it go to voicemail. This is one of the simplest ways to avoid scam calls.
- Don’t press buttons or follow prompts
Scammers use automated messages asking you to press a key. Don’t fall for it—this only confirms your number is active.
- Never give out personal info
If someone calls, texts, or emails asking for your account number, login, or Social Security number, don’t respond. CCB will never ask for sensitive information through unsolicited contact.
- Pause before paying
Scammers may impersonate your boss or family member and pressure you to act quickly. Always stop and verify through a trusted contact before making payments.
- Ignore access codes you didn’t request
Receiving a login code you didn’t ask for? That’s a red flag. Don’t use it—your account could be at risk. Change your password immediately.
- Use strong, unique passwords
Never reuse passwords. Set up multi-factor authentication on your accounts and consider using a password manager to keep track of them securely.
- Don’t trust Google search results blindly
Fraudsters sometimes create fake business listings online. Always visit a company’s official website to verify contact information.
- Report anything suspicious
If you think you may have given information to a scammer, or something feels off, contact your local CCB branch immediately. We’re here to support you.
